how to limit evaporation

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
it will however it should help get more of it out of the air

True, I shut mine off in my basement and I dont loose any water now, but I also dont have a problem with humidity.

What if you shut it off completely, it will stop the water lose. Or do you need it on because you have a problem with it being humid to begin with?

Have you looked into an air exchanger? Works kinda like your bathroom fan, well actually exactly like your bathroom fan. Its basically a fan with a humidistat, vented to the outside.

i live in michigan and only ran a 55 gallon but the heat in the summer turned my tank into a humidifier :( it attracted fleas!! i would suggest trying to get your basement windows to open or put a small door in them? basements hold alot of cool moisture and thats not good to combine with warm damp tanks.. (maybe the cause of mold) so in my opinion i would try to get more air circulation in the basement.. hope that helps :) good luck

I have used aluminum tape in the past to cover up the remaining gaps in the tank cover. you need to hit every possible gap, cover your HOB filter, ensure that the water discharge from the filter is covered up, thats where a lot of it gets evaporated, wherever there is running water. look at dryer vents and hoses that can be fitted into a basement window.

I think you are doing just about everything you can possibly do to control the humidity. Part of the problem right now is the weather we have been having. It's been an unusual November with all the rain and the 50F temperatures. It should all balance out when it finally gets cold!

Is your basement insulated at all or finished with drywall? Do you have any heat ducts in the basement?
