does anyone know how they make it.. I mean how do you turn the food slop into flake, is it just dehydrated, threw a dehydrator?? because then that would be easy.. but I think there will be more to it...

I added corn starch to my usual frozen food mixture instead of gelatin and then put it in a dehydrator. Its hard as a rock and thick so I use a mortar and pestle to crunch it up for feeding time (I have small fish but lurk here on MFK). I don't know if the starch would have been needed but its too late now!

I wouldntn trust myself making my own flake foods, the best way to do it would be to gather all your foods, mush it all together and freeze it in slabs. That way whenever you feed your fish, they get all the nutrients in 1 feeding.

i thought about doing that but if its all mush before you freeze it then when it defrosts in the tank doesnt it turn to mush again? i think dehydrating it would make it stick together in the tank

I just made my own frozen food today...It was fun!!!

Do monster fish need flakes? Babies I can understand... I just make my own mixes and feed a scoop of the mix at feeding time. If you buy in bulk, just make enough for a month and freeze the rest if it needs to be frozen. Combining everything into a paste or powder seems to cloudy the water and lead to a filthy tank.
