How to make jack Dempsey less shy

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My guy is with a ton of other fish, a few cichlids, rainbows, congo tetras, pearl gouramis, and there is a lot of cover in the tank. He tends to get lost in the woodworks at times but he's also not skittish. Only time he really vanishes is when I'm doing tank maintenance. Bloodworm cubes will always bring him out without fail.

my mated pair have no problems being out and about. male hides from time to time but never runs to hide, think he just taking a break from the wife.

here is copping a nap but comes out after he thinks maybe he is needed, female never hides.

Jacks are the fish that started me in this hobby 29 years ago. Solo a lot of them tend to be "shadow dwellers". I would put a smaller female or 2 in there with him and some expendable dithers. I've experienced a lot more activity out of my male JD's when they have a girl or 2 around. They will patrol the tank more. How is your tank scaped? I don't provide them caves (big lazy males will hang there 24/7). JD's can be conditioned to interact just like a lot of other cichlids (oscar, RD's, etc.) Have had plenty that would "beg" for food when I approached.

Well my tank has some plants that go up about half way up the tank. Only about 4 of them. And then one flowerpot and one ceramic plate.

Also would maybe adding 2 blood parrots that are more active maybe make him come out more. If I added like 2 5-6" blood parrots would it help? And would 2 females be better than like a male and female?

Or are 2 blood parrots going to be too much for my 50?

Also my JD does come out so he's not lazy. Its just whenever people or I am around. The tank is in my room. So if I'm laying down in my bed I will see him come out and swim around. He's just really shy and skittish

mine are not either, but they always spawning so, they out and about to patrol the tank. dithers would be a good ideal.
