So, this may be the easiest way to make this hobby cheap, ALOT more fun and ALOT more enjoyable.

TAKE YOUR TIME SETTING UP ! Wait and look for the deals ! If you go out there and buy a 180 stand, covering everything new its going to cost you an arm and a leg... If you have that money. Your lucky.

I spend ALOT of time on kijiji here in ontario. I picked up a 180 gal, stand and solid oak coverings for 500 bucks ! Deliverd to my front door ! I allways wait for sales and for deals to buy things. I got my fx5 for 200 bucks on sale at petsmart. I Just got an emperor 400 for TEN yes TEN dollars from a dude who closed down his tank online. I got my big peice of drift wood that in stores would of run me 100 bucks for 20 from a person online. It has been up for about two months I still need 2 more peices of drift wood. And some more rock but Im waiting for a sale or a deal online. Trust me people just take your time finishing your tank and you will save hundreds !

Some good advice, but... Sadly I don't think there is ANY way to make this hobby cheap :(. If its not the most expensive then its one of the most expensive hobbies out there. I agree you can pick up some good deals and some great things for a good price. But, there still isn't a way to make this hobby "cheap". Great advice and ill be looking out for some good deals. I just don't believe there is a way to make it "cheap"

Make this hobby cheap....

Get a gold fish bowl.... My water bill alone is more then most peoples truck payments...

This hobby is far from cheap.. And I don't think you could make it cheap unless you take me up on that goldfish bowl idea. Good luck!

I think a better phrasing would be 'less expensive'. There are ways to do/aquire things on a smaller budget, but properly caring for fish (especially monster fish) is far from a cheap undertaking.
Your suggestions are spot on though...with enough patience and flexibility as to specifics, there are plenty of deals to be found.

Sound advice. I buy all of my equipment (that I can) used and try trading for fish whenever possible. I even recycle my water from changes into my wife's garden to help. Still cant do much about the water and electricity involved in running the tanks though.

or start a fish business in your apartment and have the building association threaten to evict you.

The best way to save money is to join a fish club - a ready supply of rare fish for a fraction of LFS prices (not that you could find them at an LFS)...used tanks for a fraction of LFS prices without the BS of Craigslist...group buys on fish and supplies for discounts and often free shipping...discounts at LFS...trading with fellow fishkeepers. Oh yeah - and 10 world-class speakers / meetings per year. Free food and a a club BBQ and Christmas party. All for $20 per year membership.

Also, I culture red wiggler worms. Haven't bought live or freeze dried food in years.

Finally, keep it simple. I run a 50-ish tank fishroom with 3 air pumps, a couple canister filters, overhead flourescent light and half a dozen heaters. Probably less than $75 per month in electricity. People keep fish way warmer than necessary and way overfilter (or filter inefficiently), resulting in higher energy bills.
