How to make this hobby cheap !

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
saving which way?

we went over this on a aus forum, came down to solar energy, heat the water using solar water heater setup correctly (complicated as hell) heat the room over tanks, insulate as much as possible, dont waste old water and try to diy as much as you can. These where all on the topic of fish rooms not single tanks, I dont think there is anyway you can really keep a single tank down apart for using sponges over canister etc but the difference is little

Some good advice, but... Sadly I don't think there is ANY way to make this hobby cheap :(. If its not the most expensive then its one of the most expensive hobbies out there. I agree you can pick up some good deals and some great things for a good price. But, there still isn't a way to make this hobby "cheap". Great advice and ill be looking out for some good deals. I just don't believe there is a way to make it "cheap"

I would have to nominate custom cars/hot rods for being more expensive. Unfortunately that's my other hobby

Lol ur in a bad situation! Two of the most expensive hobbies there are! I think that if your tank is big enough then it can cost more than some of the cars do. Like arapaimag, but he's on a different scale of MFK lol. 50000 gallons is crazy! Tanks past 1000 gallons I think can cost as much as some cars lol. But, I've seen some of those crazy expensive cars and they can cost hundreds of thousands!

There are plenty of hobbies more expensive than fish keeping... Heck even photography can run your finances to the ground buying lens etc...

As to make this hobby less expensive, yeah there are ways im sure, but would probably involve a large initial setup to help cut down cost in the long run... I.e solar panels as one member mentioned

Working at a fish store helps too, aside from store discounts I regularly get free tanks, filters etc from customers, coworkers and family friends.

i paid $300 fo a cracked 300 gal tank.repourposed pumps,made a garbage can filter.and i just picked up a lobster tank off the bulivard for free.put a fx5 i already had.and i feed 14 large rbp northern my dad catches.

one thing is to start breeding get a mbuna set up for cheap get a few grow out tanks and sell them you can pay for your hobbie (food, lights and more fish or plants)

Good advice. I wait for deals all the time. That's definitely the way to do it!
Andrew, this hobby is expensive but for sure not the worst. My other hobbies are Mountain Biking and Firearms. MTBs cost much more, and Firearms arent cheap.
