How to measure a fish?

I put a ruler on my stand horizontally and when fish swim by that part of the glass its very simple to make an accurate apprx.

Easy, stress free.

The responses in this thread suck.

There are multiple ways to measure a fish. The most common and standard are listed below:

SL is measured snout to last vertebra
TL is measured snout to end of caudal fin (typically pinching the caudal fin together by pushing on the top and bottom of the fin)
FL is measured snout to end of middle caudal fin ray (this is how I like to measure cats because some have very long streamers on their caudal fin)

That is stupid for fish hobbyists. This isn't a sport fishing forum. Only thing that matters here is total length.

That's your opinion. But it's still a good reference for anyone that ever sees anything other than TL listed.

Me too. and for a real tale length I measure to the end of their longest crap streamers.
 
Beats netting and stressing.... And possibly having your finger bitten off.. ^^
