How to move a Silver?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
another method is to try to have the aro swim inside a pillow cover ....those things where you put the pillows inside, white ones, with buttons so that the pillow don't slide out..you close one side and that is it... of course it doesnt hold the water, but it doesn't hurt the aro..and the trip between tanks is a short one, right? similar to the wet tshirt but safer, I think.

Go to a LFS ang ask them for a large enough bag to fit your aro in.
Drain 50% of the water in the tank then mave him swim in the bag and scoop him up.

I tried this with a garbage bag and my aro jumped straight through the bag.(it was the HD type)

Some people say that they also have used pillow cases.

Exactly, but in case the lfs doesn't have any large bags, use a 4 or 5 mil garbage bag, particularly the contractors grade bag.

This is the least stressful on the fish, plus if you fill the bag up with enuff water for the aro but light enough for you to carry out of tank, you can put the aro w/bag into a rubber bin and do your drip/acclimating so the aro will adjust to the new tank param. Once the aro is acclimated, remove half of the water from the bag to lighten the load and lift the bugger (bag and all) and place the bag into the new tank and open it underwater and let him swim out on his own. <-----damn run on sentences!

Takes longer to do, but why stress the aro anymore? Especially now he/she is in a new surrounding. :grinno:

That was what I did years ago when giving away my 22" silver and then he was murdered 3 years later by a 6yr old brat! :irked: :swear:

I used big black garbage bags and tripled them, then put them in and caught the Aro, and used 2 people to lift out the Aro and as much water as safe, put a rubbermaid tote outside level with the tank and had some water in there already, so the bags were free hanging with Aro for minimal time. I was really worried that they would break!

This could be a new invention idea, "the Aro carrier" so many possibilities....

Quick, get a patent on that idea before someone jumps on it! :naughty:

prophets. i dont think a huge aro really needs to be acclimated. but why not jus test both tanks n make sure both are almost on the dot that way there is no purpose for acclimating, make it a quick move. get ur big guy, in his new big tank.

I'd rather err on the safe side. That is from my experience of transferring fishes, rather be safe than sorry. Spending all that time and money on a specimen, I don't want to risk getting the fish sick or possibly dying on me. Even with the parameters that are the same which is not a guarantee, but close enough to the original settings, I'd rather acclimate the fish. Call me overcautious, but I'd rather do it nice and slow, rather than just dumping the bugger in the new tank.

Only time I did that was with Koi's when moving from a tank into a pond, and then only if the temp of the pond is with 1 degree of the tank temp, these were asagi's and shusui's that were around 10-14 inches.

But everyone has their own way of doing things. That's life.:grinno:

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I think I gonna go with the Koi net. As far as acclimating, my plan was to take 60 gallons of water for his current tank and add 60 gallons of new water. This would be the same as his usual 50% weekly water change. But I have to scrap that idea because of the dust cloud the flourite has produced. So I'll look into how to acclimate in a different process.

And just think I get to do this all again this summer.

maybe you should jus wait. it aint gonna kill him to be in there for a few more months n grow a few more inches. my neighbor has a 28" silver in a 80gal long... its been in there for the past 3 years. not the "best" advice but maybe less stressful on the fish if you only move it once.

No can't do that I need to get him outa the tank he's in so I can start breeding my discus. I've got 2 pairs that are spawning, but in a community tank the eggs/fry don't last.

Plus isn't telling someone to keep the aro in a smaller tank against the MFK code or somethin' like that. Usually it's "Dude, you gotta upgrade! Now!"

Hey ethnics when ya movin' your aros?
