How to: Moving really big tanks??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I won't know the thickness until tomorrow. I'm going to assume it's 3/4" and 1.5" on the bottom if I had to take a wild guess.

I think I was right. 3/4" and I couldn't tell if the bottom was 1" or 1.5". 1200lbs if I had to guess.

another option is leaving it "flat" and coming in through a window. Theres alot of pics of that being done on here aswell with 10-12 people carrying huge glass tanks.

I'd really prefer not to have to take it apart and re-assemble it, but it's always an option. I'm going to call the company that made the tank and see what they advise.

I just called a bunch of piano movers. I found a few who would do it and are fully insured. In a way I'd almost like them to break it, pay the deductible and then have an essentially new tank for much less than the full price lol

Well... it got moved today. It took 5 people, about 90 minutes (25 min driving time!) 2 dollies, ten 700lb rated suction cups, a truck, and a van.... but it's done. Only one tiny scuff on a doorway from the stand, otherwise there's no damage I can see anywhere else. We will see if it holds water soon. All in all, quite successful. Big thanks to the seller and my buddy for helping, plus the 2 guys who built it originally!

WOW!! Awesome looking tank. Congrats!!

I think I'm in the minority, but I love a big glass tank...

You're not in the minority. ;)

Nice tank BTW. I wouldn't have had the balls to move that down stairs but those professional movers are strong as an ox.

Thanks. Your tank is way better though!

Actually... no professional movers. Myself, a friend, the tank builder and his assistant, and the seller of the tank. 5 guys under 6', maybe one over 200lbs. I'm pretty sure the safety factor of this tank is like 6.0 or something. No joke. It's rock solid.

Did the aquarium builder recommend resealing it, just to make sure?
Nice pickup that thing is a monster.
