I have recently heard a lot about american eels and have heard they do well in captivity and thought it would be a great species to add to my collection. Would anyone one here know how to get an american eel and does anyone here have experience keeping them? Thanks

find a local chinatown store that sells fish as food, you might be able to find eels there, the chinatown near me sells them but i'm in ohio, idk about cali...

Or you can go to a bait shop and buy some small American eels(especially during striper season).

You MUST make sure your tank is 100% escape proof. I've heard too many stories of people keeping this fish and getting caught in the filter or crawling out of the tank and drying out.

+1, and it will have to be a very large tank, since they get to 3-4' long.

ur 2 best bets are already listed, rod n reel or a good quality baitshop during striper season

They like to dig so allow enough substrate for them to bury themselves.

Generally these guys start out very shy and gradually get used to their keepers. They are sensitive to light. When my eel is active and I turn the room lights on, he always immediately burrows under the substrate. Expect to see nothing more than the eel poking its head out of the substrate most of the time. Regardless, I still find the fish fascinating and have spent long hours watching mine sit there.
