How to plants a dirt tank.

I started a dirted tank and I noticed when I dug the plants in the substrate the dirt start to lift off the bed. How can I plant new plants without disturbing the dirt?

Do you have sand or small gravel over the dirt? When I plant in a dirted tank, the dirt stays under the top layer of sand....You need at least an inch and a half of sand or whatever capping the dirt

It's sand. It's atleast a 3/4-1" capping the dirt. So I will more sand. Now what about the planting? Do I just push the plant down instead of making a small hole then pushing it down?
