how to plumb a built in overflow

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
is there a difference between a slip and a union? how do i brace the pvc pipe if i choose to go that route?

another question also, would it be a beneficial idea to fill my overflows with scrubbies or bio balls? i figure that a) it would quiet the noise and b) essentially act as two wet dry columns, if i place something as mechanical filtration on top of each column so it wouldn't catch the large chunks of whatever have you. i know that would make my nitrates rise but wouldn't my fefugium counteract that? or am i way off base?

Those tall waste-of-space vertical overflow boxes are perfect for a Durso standpipe. Easy and cheap to make, and they get rid of all the noise in the overflow box. If you had a second hole, you could go a step further and rean a Herbie pipe for a totally silent setup.

But Durso works to get rid of the waterfall sound. http://www.dursostandpipes.com/

I was going to suggest that actually as I know a fellow AZ MFKer that has a "bio-tower" like this and works great.

See you are having fun with that beast already huh? First time i ever got to see down the overflows haha

You know you sound like a virgin.....when it comes to sumps....LOL

i know, i was new to saltwater when i got the tank and the sump was predone and ready to go. so know the question is which is better for the overall system, durso or bio tower

I say Durso. If you're already gonna be running a sump, a bio tower is not needed. You'll have more media than you'll ever need in the sump. Unless of course you enjoy the sound of Niagara falls in your house :D

X2

plus the bio balls in the overflow will just collect a bunch of crap.
