Actually it is pronounced Buna (bu-na) as described in The Guide To Owning Malawi Cichlids by David E. Boruchowitz. The M would be silent but most english speakers do pronounce it (um-boo-na). So either way you pronounce it people are probably going to know what you are talking about. Mbuna in african language actually means "rockfish". As for Bichir I read once that the orignal way to pronounce it came from france and it is bee-sheer. for the fish food I use that brand but have no clue how to say it I just grab it off the shelf and buy it lol.

I have never heard it pronounced like that. I always say and hear UM BOO NUH.

Not saying you are wrong, because it sounds like you got your info from a good source.

Wow, I'll add to the confusion....
mbuna- um-boo-na
hikari- hi-car-ee
bichir- b(eye)cher

I have no idea what's right or wrong. It's like the stressing of an i at the end of a scientific name (eye or ee) :nilly:

I've been saying Ma-Boo-Na (but I never really knew how to say it), Hi-Car-E, and Bi-Char.

i also read somewheres that the m was silent in mbuna. so i've always pronounced it boo-na.

i only got 2 bichirs and i cannot pronounce either of their names, so i guess and seem to always say bi-tch-er. i'm sure that is wrong tho.

high-car-i usually how i say that. :D
