How to properly clean substrate?

Vacuum just about half to 3/4 inch deep.. You dont remove gas as it is part of the cycle or if gravel is big enough, gas doesnt stay between those little stones but evaporates before it gets dangerous ..thick layer of gravel is like biomedia..the most dangerous is thick layer of sand,where gas is trapped and cant get out - when you vacuum that,you release gas, fishes become dizzy in few seconds, death in minute.. Unfortunately saw that with my own eyes..

Ok I see.

Btw, for sand how thick does the substrate have to be to keep in all these gases? I was planning on switching to sand soon and was planning maybe 1 inch of sand. I Will stir the sand weekly with my water changes to remove any gas bubbles. Is that good or should I stir the sand more often than a week?
