How to put glass in a plywood tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The tank is supposed to be 40" high with a 36" tall glass pane. How do I go about this?

Okay so your glass is only 36" tall, not 40? that means once your frame is in place your actual viewing window will be closer to 32 or 33.

My tank is 40" tall. Here's a couple of pics from when I installed it to make the concept a little easier for you to understand.;)
You can see that the glass panel is sealed in with silicone. You can see the rest of the build in my sig below.;)

I understand almost fully now. I don't mind how big the viewing window is as long as its more than 24" Im fine with it. How is the front supported? I have heard a bunch of different things

How is the front supported? Exactly the same as the back wall only it has a large hole in it to allow for the viewing window.. Read the build thread and it will become a little clearer for you. ;)

Oh I thought you needed special support for the front!

At that height i would consider a 2x4 frame for the entire tank or extra thick plywood as i believe gt did

I would 100% do a 2X4 frame for a tank that large/deep. Skin the inside of it with marine grade plywood. Fiberglass the interior corners/edges at a minimum, and pond liner for the rest.

Then skin the outside however you want. You could do it with a stainable high grade wood, or you could do it like is shown above, and just skin and paint it. Personally, I'd like to skin and paint it black with some cheaper wood, then use stainless angle trim for the corners.

greenterra.....what thickness of glass did you use for the 40" depth. And what was the price? I priced out 8X4 panes a while back, and they were crazy expensive to get the thickness the calculators required. Do you have a source for cheap glass?

The glass is 19mm and cost me $1400 delivered to my house at the time. As you can see, 19mm and above is very costly here. In fact, it was over half of the total build cost. I could have halved the glass price if I dropped the tank height a little and used 15mm glass. That being said, I love the extra height.
