Do you have some kind of valve to throttle the pump back ?

My pumps never do that unless you throttle back the flow to much or if it's running dry

Is the pump vibrating on the tank causing the noise or is it the pump itself? A sponge under the pump should work if its vibrating off the tank/sump.

if it's pump noise it may just be vibrating against something in the sump if you surround it in foam or sponge that should isolate a lot of vibration

I have a mag9.5 in my sump. Magdrives are notorious for vibrating and aren't the quietest unit on the market.

I achieved quietness by using corrugated silicone pads where the plumbing came in contact with the stand

I also put some underneath the pump. I hard plumbed the pump with pvc which is a big no no for noise, but it worked out in my favor because I was able to up size to 1.5" pvc.

Alot of pump noise or humming comes from unnecessary pressure being on the impeller. Things like ball valves, high pumping height (head pressure), small diameter tubing, too many 90° bends.. etc
These factors cause turbulence and can make even a quiet pump loud. Some pumps are naturally noisy however and you may have to live with it.

one solution i read is to put a small section of flexible hose in between the pump and the pvc to reduce vibration.

That is very true for 1" or 3/4" plumbing.

It wasn't an option as 1.5" flexible tubing is not "flexible". 1.5" spa flex, vinyl, or reinforced vinyl tubing are basically as hard as a piece of schedule 40 pvc lol. I could have found some corrugated flexible ribbed hose, but by the time I put hose barbs or couplers in the mix or w/e you're stepping the inner diameter down to 1.25" or smaller, which wasn't my goal.

It ended up good. No 90°s or whatever. uploadfromtaptalk1428097373772.jpg large high flow plumbing is where it's at.
