how to safely put sand in freshwater tanks?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
actually, i divided the tank. the silver snakehead is only 3" long. i put in with the red devil as it always bothers my oscar and they are doing fine. :) but for sure, the red devil didnt like the oscar. if i didnt put a divider in it, she would surely bite to pieces. O.O

PFS is pool filter sand. Rinse in a 5 gallon bucket. Turn off your filter (just in case). Pour sand in one side then the other. The fish will get out of the way. Don't bother landscaping it all, the oscar will do that for you.

oh, so pfs can be found in lfs huh? what if i put real beach sand in the tank, which is sand tht i can get by my own and not buying one? is it okay?

oh, really? so if i were to use beach sand, what do i have to do before putting it in the tank? just wash it thoroughly?

Place in container like 5 gal bucket, fill will scalding hot water and half a cap of bleach (not the scented kind) stir it around with cooking spoon or something similar, dump the water and rinse it a few more times to get the bleach out. Then rinse again and dose a dechlor like prime in the bucket, stir around dump water and rinse one last time.

This way you kill any and all bacteria, algae, fungus and whatever else is on that sand from the beach and all the small debris rinses out. The dechlor will neutralize the bleach so no worries.
