How to set up a new saltwater tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes starting a reef right off the bat isn't the greatest idea. There is a lot of redundancy in the testing that you have to do so its easy to slack on the precision of the water parameters. Some people get it right away and some don't. Its easy to spend 30 to 100 dollars on a nice looking frag to only have it die a few days later.

Sent from my SCH-R880 using MonsterAquariaNetwork App

way to easy, i did it more than once.

:iagree: First, amp up your filtration like others said. I have a wet dry and it works great, i highly recommend it. Second, cycle your tank. you need to do it with some kind of fish, i prefer yellowtail damsels. Let it cycle for 4 weeks/ 1 month then you can add fish.

Coral lose happens to everybody even those with well established tanks, it can be a real crap shoot. Personally I think the larger the animal the better, frags can be down right difficult when moved from system to system esp. systems with a fish population.

A lot of things.

fill your tank with R/O DI water. after you put in your sand and aquascape your rock.
add salt
check salinity
add Dr. Tim's one and only.
at the same time, add some fish
I KNOW I WANT TO ADD DAMSEL FISH! LOL OMGZ
no, don't every cycle your tank with damsels. they are terrible fish
add some blue green chromis, you'll actually be able to pull these guys out of the tank once it's cycled.
cycle the tank

now you can start adding real fish.

when you understand how to dose kalkwasser or have a properly functioning calcium reactor (they are basically the best thing in the world) you can think about growing corals. if you do water changes you can grow corals in smaller tanks, but you need to be adding the right nutrients.

go to reefcentral and spend a couple days reading up on what they have to say. there are a ton of different schools of thought about basically everything, and they all have worked for someone somewhere.

i would recommend buying a controller for your tank. You have no idea how much money this can save for a reefer. but a controller before you fill your tank.

there is just too much to write here.

everyone hates cycling with damsels ...lol i cycled mine with a blue and the one and only ... i then bought a behns damsel...i guess im just a cheap reefer lol...
