Tomorrow I am picking up a new (to me) 30 gallon setup with the intent to breed convicts and maybe switch over to yellow labs or something later on. I'm just wondering how I should set the tank up for optimal breeding conditions. I think my LFS still has a sale on convicts, so I'll stop by tomorrow and maybe put some on hold until I can get the tank cycled.

convicts will breed any where lol but i found luck with deep gravel and rock caves they like making little nest moving one peace of gravel at a time

a friend of mine was telling me how he had a pair mate in a five gallon bucket..

You pretty much need a tank and water.. make sure you have a male and female and then just wait. lol Throw in a couple of clay pots or something nice for the eggs to get laid in and there you go!

This is my ideal breeding setup for convicts and most cryptoheros.

Aside from being too small this tank has everything a breeding pair needs. 20 breeders and 29gallons are my preferred setup for an adult pair. The tank pictures is a 20breeder that's divided but I've got a young pair (rainbow cichlids & honduran red points) on each end. I'm waiting to make sure they are good breeders before I give them their own tank. When you get a good sized pair feed them high protein foods (brine or mysis shrimp) for a week and give them a waterchange and that should get them going. Being convicts though they should breed without optimal conditions LOL.

Fish tank, water, heater at around 80, filter, convicts.......:D

It's said they'll breed in a puddle......be careful, before you get the babies out, they'll have more eggs. They breed like crazy once you get a good pair.

They also seem to like those clay pots a lot, some gravel. You can get the pots at home depot for around $1 or so.

Just play some Al Green

water, clay pot, heater, filter ...Usually always always works.
I had two convicts breed when they were about 2.5 inches...

I can't breed convicts :( Though I only tried once and of the 2 females in my group one was shortbody so maybe sterile...either that or I just suck. But I've bred JD's and sevs which both should be harder...so I blame my cons.
