i recently got a 48x24x24 120 gallon aquarium. If I give a few fish away I could clear some space out and not have to put any of my current fish in my 120 gallon aqaurium. I was thinking about an umbee or dovii. But beacause the males get so massive I wanted a female. I was thinking about asking my LFS to get some of these so I could pick a female out and they could sell the rest. So i need a way to sex umbees and doviis. I wanted to be a way to sex it just by looking at it in an aquarium but if I have to i might be able to vent them.

Pretty hard until they reach about 6" the females of those species are pretty dull and boring compaired to the males IMO. If it where me id get a nice green terror pair

Titles a little creepy if you ask me...
Theres lots of other fish that look nicer than female dovii of umbee. The males are where the color is at. Why not go for a trimac or rtm or jag. They would all fit fine and will look better than a female umbee or dovii

Would it be bad if I just ot a random juvie? It is hard to find a male past 18 inches.

How do you sex Jags? i wanted a male beacause the females only get 12-13 inches. What is the chance I will get one that will become a 16+ inch monster?

Chances depend on how long and how well you take care of them. Female umbee and dovii are pretty drab in the color department....Try looking for a fish that will will not get so large and still have nice color
Would a male Jag fit the bill?

i think a male jag, would be good,i never heard of any over 16 inches.why not get a group, and try to get a pair? if they form a good bond then the lack of tank length hopefully won't become an issue.OR RTM pair,or freddies.the males max is slightly smaller than jags

I've got a good friend that keeps and breeds jags in a 120 "fatboy" like you have. The jags are probably 14" or so and they get along great. That doesn't mean that you will have the same luck as him...but it's worth a shot if you like that particular fish.
