How To Sex Florida Gars

Hi all,

I am looking for some information on how to Sex Florida Gars....

I have 2 in a 8 x 3 x 2 tank and they both have different features to them so I was just looking for some clarification on how to sex them correctly..

Here is a pic of my 2 lets say guys for the time being..

Externally you can't. With a lab you could.

What are courting behaviors of Florida gar?
I have two Florida gars and they often swim in circles chasing one anothers tails. They don't do this very fast, just gracefully and gently...never biting eachother. They also often swim very close to one another rubbing up against eachother very slowly.

That is just social organizing has nothing to do with spawning behavior.
 
blood sampling if i'm not wrong. you could gauge by size for large wild specimens too.
 
I think Both of your's fish are female.
must see from the side
simple way is the female have bigger body than male especialy in the end body (probability is 80 % )
you can imagine how bigger fish stomach if contain more than 10000 egg.

ummmm no. i'm sure you have some basis for your comments, but this doesn't always hold true as we have had plenty of large and fat male gars both from the wild and captivity. this also varies quite a bit among species and further in individuals.

i'm thinking of posting a thread titled "how to externally sex gars in captivity" that way it will be pinned. the contents of the thread will be this post:

there is no way to sex gars externally in captivity.

I'm still very well reminded of the day we looked over several fish looking for suspected females only to wind up with one out of four suspected females guessed right. The one Big fat and thick male was a real shocker...

As a repeat:
there is no way to sex gars externally in captivity
