How To Sex Florida Gars

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have read everything that has been posted here, im not disagreeing with what anyone is saying, i would like to mention tho, i have 5 florida spotted gar at the moment and 1 of them is very small in comparison to the other 4, my 4 bigger gar are very thick all the way threw the body and they are about 9-12 inches long where as my one smaller guy is perportionatly smaller and only about 6 inches, they were all purchased at the same time, i got them when they were about 3 inches long, and i always monitor there feeding, the smaller guy eats just as much meybe more then the bigger ones do. my theory is that the smaller gar in my tank is a male and the other 4 bigger gar are females. i will try to post pics, thats just my 2 cents tho

you're dealing with YOY gars, so they aren't even mature yet (takes about 3 years for males, 4-6 for females in wild) and gender differences like this don't show up at this point. you're just looking at variability among a group of similarly aged gars. if your gars were all 8 years old and you were noticing this difference there would be slightly more validity to the conclusions. just trying to explain how your statement pertains to actual dimorphism in gars--

I'm sorry if my guess is wrong. yes is true that sexing florida gar in wild is very hard and not always true that the big gar is female. i never had gar from wild so I don't know about it.
The reason i say that is there like my gar. this is a photo of 1 my female and 2 my male (My water PH is 8.5 / GH = 15 ( ***** test kit)).

Yeah, but just because your small sample of fish show this suspected dimorphism as you describe..... does not make it hold true in all cases.

exactly. was going to get into that but was busy hitting my head against the wall about plenty of other stuff :P

definitely not enough to make a general statement about captive or wild gars, at least not with much true confidence and likely low accuracy.

good that the fish in question were able to spawn apparently though--

The positive of not being able to sex a gar (unless you want to breed, which I think is pretty tough) is that you can just chose what sex you want it to be, and since nobody can prove you wrong, then you must be right. ;-)

That is just social organizing has nothing to do with spawning behavior.

^^SO TRUE!^^

what does YOY mean? Is it a acronym?

means young of the year
