How to shim a tank.....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Great, thanks! Was your tank on a carpet? mine is on a thick carpet. should still work though right? also the bottom is not covered in plywood, just 2x4s, will shimming under them work?

yeah we have the same exact situation. my tank sits on carpet and the tank does not have a flat bottom, just the 2x4 framing. worked fine for me

sorry, dont have any pics. the stand is basically shimmed on one side though, about 2ft. its not pretty but my tank is perfectly level now!

I actually just checked out your thread on your 210gal. i can sort of see how you shimed it on the right hand side, so i now get the idea. I think we actually have the same carpet and very simular stands. so i'll just do what you did with yours. thanks alot jcardona1!

Though it may be a pain, drain it down to the bottom plastic trim.
Use that as a reference and shim it with "door shims".
Used for installing doors, they can be had in bundles at the big box home stores for cheap.
Once the tank is level on the trim, start filling it back up and use a tape measure or ruler at all corners to monitor it as it fills.
A hammer and chunk of 2x4 can be used to drive the shims in further as the weight increases if it crushes more and becomes out of level.
Once it's full and level, drive a screwdriver under any excess shim and pry up quickly to break off the stub, or use a hand saw to trim off the ends .
