How to ship 8 juvenile cichlids? HELP!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They are juveniles... he says they're one to one and a half inches. This next week the weather is supposed to be good both here and where they're coming from. But I don't know about all the places in between. So overnight it is... If he ships them early monday will they get here early tuesday?

Wow, awesome advice guys!

Liz, I have a styrofoam shipping container and box. Lots of them actually lol. When you get the fish, you'll have to keep the container...they're awesome to use when bringing home fish from the LFS or private dealer.

Since you're going to be at school, I wonder if we should ship UPS or Fed Ex overnight, hold for pick up at terminal. I use that a lot at work when shipping parts out to the service guys. You could stop by the terminal on your way home and pick them up. That would be better than having them not deliver or having them sit on your porch all day (though most warehouses aren't heated).

You'll want to read up on how to acclimate shipped fish. They are pretty vulnerable the moment you open the bag.

Having them held for pickup at the FedEx terminal is the best way to go. I pick up most of my fish this way. It keeps them from being stuck on a cold truck all day, and you won't have to worry as much about the box getting damaged by a FedEx driver/delivery person. You can call FedEx with your address and they'll tell you where the nearest FedEx facility is to have the package held. Make sure it's not too far out of your way -- mine is 45 minutes from my house. When you pick them up, you need an ID of some kind and your tracking #.

You'll still need several heat packs. I recommend 4 for this time of year. FedEx routes packages all over the country. To ship a package from south Florida to central Florida, FedEx puts the package on a plane in Miami and sends it to a holding facility in Tennessee where it catches a flight back to Orlando. So it's not so much about where it's coming from and where it's going, but all the points it has to go through before getting to you. Chances are it'll get bounced around the country.

It's also a good idea to check the weather in general. If you log into FedEx to track a package right now, there are big red texts at the top of the page informing you that there could be winter weather delays. If the fish get stuck at a cold shipping terminal overnight because of weather, even heat packs may not be enough to keep them alive. It's just something to keep in mind!

Ryan,

Thank you for all the advice and tips. I am starting to feel a lot better about this with the exception of concerns over weather.

Liz, when you get some time, please PM me your address and nearest UPS and Fed Ex facilities. Tomorrow is soon enough.

I will check estimated pricing tomorrow and see what our best bet is.

So, as of right now, we're planning on shipping Monday, receiving Tuesday, correct?

lol, I just thought of something. Our CEO is up this week out of Houston. Wonder if I could talk him into an extra bag on the return trip? :D
