Key is to keep the bottom almost clear of stuff, but still provide hiding by hanging driftwood on the bracing of your tank or something like that.

i like that gravel very much and i think i am off to the lfs so i can change this around.

I like black substrate myself, but I know you are more partial to a natural tone. Red looks like it would work. Lets see those pics when your"e done.

Some like Barton setup would work nice. Get driftwoods that have skiny branches so you can see the bichirs if they hide in there. Avoid big chunk of driftwood.

i like loubard's setup .... you could do a combination of the gravel, a long log like loubard's and then tie the fern with fishing line to the log ... i myself like plants plus they take nitrogen out of the water ...

I would take all the gravel and fern out and add a thin layer of sand, with a couple of driftwood pieces.
