Here&There
How should the problems associated with keeping MonsterFish be solved? I am talking about things like big fish in little tanks (animal abuse) & fish being released into the wild. It comes down to people buying fish that they ultimately can't take care of. The fish ends up getting too large and they either do nothing and let the fish suffer or they release them into the nearest body of water. The consequences could include getting laws passed that prohibit the sale of many of our favorite species. They are destroying awesome animals and may end up ruining it for those of us who do it right. So? What needs to happen to prevent these scenarios from playing out? I def don't have the answer; I just know I don't want my hobby policed.

smuggling will always be an issue but slapping massive prices on fish that require only the most serious hobbiests to care for them would at least make a dent.
i imagine some sort of licensimg system would work (at least in the UK), with a fee and home visit. the license fee would pay for the home visit by a member of the RSPCA to check tank/indoor pond size.
none of the usual "when it gets bigger I will upgrade" rubbish or you will be refused a license.

just my opinion and im probably going to get jumped on now because of how unfeasible my idea is but they do it with dangerous reptiles such as camen and it seems to work for that.

Well you can start a rescue... Pass word around that you will help rehome or take animals that can't be kept. People come to me for rescuing animals. They know that I am someone who will go out of my way to help them either search or rehome a pet. Most times I can't take the animal home. I'll try if I can. Its an up hill battle against animal abuse and uneducated people getting pets they shouldn't. Something I fight everyday.

Look at what is happening in the Everglades. Boas, pythons, oscars & other ornamental fish. Introduction of nonnative species is bound to happen- the world is shrinking. Just need to reduce the number of avoidable BS problems. Side note- I was at a local park the other day and had a bright blue parakeet buzz my head and land in a tree near me. They ARE NOT native to the Commonwealth of KY. New state bird?

I run a rescue out of my house. I post on craigslist constantly "willing to take in large fish" and all the local LFS's within 200 miles have my number and call me when a big fish gets surrendered to them. I am one who will increase my number and size of tanks till the day I die for these fish. I just love them.

Fish being released or not cared for properly is the byproduct of people wanting something that is just a fad, looks cool or just plain ignorant. Just be glad that the rest of the US doesn't have a climate like Florida.........

really not much you can do IMO. you can educate people all you want, but the truth is some people are just plain dumb and/or dont give a crap about a fish's wellbeing. to them it's just an 'object' and the thought of cruelty doesnt cross their mind. the right person will provide a good home for their fish. the other type will not, no matter what you do
