more light + faster shutter speed will result in a much sharper image.

I will have to figure out how to up her shutter speed, I'm going to play with the lighting a lot tonight though. I will post some pictures if I get good ones.

Easiest way is to use flash, fast shutter speed, and very small aperture. You can also play with the levels in PS to get a darker background.

I'm making my gf teach me about aperture right now lol.. I'm really good with photoshop too so thats a plus, I've just never bothered altering my fish photos.

Also, if you turn all the lights off in the room you're in, it usually helps too. ;)

conclusion.. canon rebels are garbage.

You might want to take a course in photography before trashing any camera. Good photographers can take amazing photos with any camera. You just need to know how to use the tool.

Top mounted remote flash while using a high f-stop & fast shutter will probably give you the result you're looking for. That'll give you the least amount of ambient light and pretty much only the flash for illumination.

With a canon digital rebel, you'll need the st-e2 flash commander plus a flash (430ex or 580ex) to pull it off. You could experiment with just a 430/580 without remote use and see what results you can get, just make sure you use a diffuser. The built in flashes on pretty much every camera on the market are not powerful enough to properly light a high shutter speed + small aperture (large f-stop). You could try, but you probably won't be able to go much beyond f/8 or f/11 @ 1/100 - 1/200s exposure without bumping up the sensitivity (ISO).

You'll find that when using flash, you're best bet is to use the full manual mode. Guess if you want to get fancy and drag the shutter, Av would be fine as well.
