It's lacking pretty much every diagnostic for determining if it's a gar or not:
- The snout is wrong.
- The tail is wrong. True gars do not have a homocercal forked tail (symmetrical fin) rather they have a heterocercal tail (vertebrae extend into upper lobe); this difference is readily viewed in juvenile gars.
- The scales are wrong. True gars have ganoid scales which are diamond-shaped, shiny, and hard; these scales are of a different composition than that of other scales.
- The fins are wrong. True gars lack an adipose fin and only have a dorsal fin.
