How to tell the difference with Florida/spotted Gar and Pike characin?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, but how can you tell? is it the snout? or tail?

It's lacking pretty much every diagnostic for determining if it's a gar or not:
  • The snout is wrong.
  • The tail is wrong. True gars do not have a homocercal forked tail (symmetrical fin) rather they have a heterocercal tail (vertebrae extend into upper lobe); this difference is readily viewed in juvenile gars.
  • The scales are wrong. True gars have ganoid scales which are diamond-shaped, shiny, and hard; these scales are of a different composition than that of other scales.
  • The fins are wrong. True gars lack an adipose fin and only have a dorsal fin.
