Wow, yeah an 80% change could do that with no conditioner. You may have also radically altered the water chem from it's previous parameters. How long did you mix the salt for before hand? Salt has a super high ph when first mixed.

not long at all, maybe a few mins to 30 idk exactly, i obviously wasn't paying attention to this process. i am sure that everything was outta wack and i just didn't stop to check it till it was too late. this substright change was a random thought that i just did. it was the first time i have done that big of a change on my salt tank. i do those large changes on my fresh, but not my salt cause the fish are hypersensitive. i just didn't want to lose any fish under the new sand so i was looking down into the tank from above so i could see when i could see all the fish including my scooter blennies.

all in all i totally beefcaked this thing like a total noob. idk if i had to much on my mind or too much going on at the time, but damn. i am so pissed off at myself for this stupid error/errors. i still can't belive that i did that, after 18+yrs of fish keeping and i do that.:screwy:

That sucks man. We all do stupid things every once in a while. At least you learn from it right?

Wow, yikes. I would never change that much water to change substrate. If you want to change out substrate, take it out via a siphon over a few water changes and then shut all the water flow off and put the sand into the tank in bags and slowly remove the bag with all the sand on the bottom. This will minimize the storm and hopefully make it somewhat easier on your fish.

i didn't have a bucket to use for the siphon method as i used that way before. this time my fish bucket was taken by my brother-in-law for his oil change on his car:irked:. i didn't intend to change that much water i was looking from the top down and then after it was to low, i noticed that it was to much. i use a sink attatchment line so the water was already down the drain so i couldn't put some back in. i wont be doing something like that again.

sounds like you accidently treated the process like a FW tank. We have all moved that fast with FW tanks....I know I have..

sucks man. live and learn. thats all we can do :D

Yep, I know I have had to catch myself a couple times with water changes and mixing salt before I put it in the tank. Sorry about your fish bro.
