how to transfer fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
as much water as you can transfer from the 30g plus the bacteria in the filter on your 30g should be enough to allow your fish to safely settle into your new 55g. Transfer your fish into a holding bucket with an air stone (if your have one). Then transfer what water you can to the 55g and allow the filter to run for 1-2 hours (more if you feel necessary), unless you have any extremely sensitive fish they will adapt to the changes in no time!

If your 30 is cycled you are transferring everything to the 55 you should have well established substrate, decor etc. Your filter from your 30 should be just fine to keep everything ok. I moved everything from a 110 to a 180. Fish in tubs, sand from one tank to the other and then all the decor after sand. Took several hours but everything was just fine. Dont use all new water. Use 20-25 gals of your old water so you dont harm the bacteria that is living on all of your old stuff. Look at it this way....your 30 is cycled it will all still be cycled in a bigger tank.

You can cycle it the way I do, just throw the fish in and let nature take its course. Make sure the water is conditioned and then just feed the fish once a day and test your water, do water changes when needed. I never lost a fish this way. The only difference between a cycled tank and one that is not cycled is the beneficial bacteria. Clean Water + Add Fish + Feed + Do Water Changes. Your tank will cycle in no time. I also add some bacteria in a bottle to cycle the tank fast.

what if the gravel i have already has the bacteria needed and the tank comes with bacteria starter packets like mine does. it came with like 2 packets

This is DEFINITELY the way to go! We tried to move our pond fish from a 30 into a 120 gallon tank, saving all of the water and gravel for it. Too bad the tank sprung a leak and all of the fish were in small rubber maids all day and ended up getting ich from the temp change stress! I'm sure you're larger tank probably holds water though, so this should be a simple move. Hope all goes well!

thanks for the help. I used bits and pieces of everyones advice with very little problems. The only problem i had is when the outlet for the filter i had on the tub died :P so then i had to work fast to get the filter runnning in the 55. Plus doing water changes on the tub every 15 minutes but all ended well and my 55 is set up. stay tuned for pics.
