I think these should be banned from aquarists. They are on the threatened list now and I think it should be left to the pros the breed them and get them back to a striving population in the wild before they should have "wild" ones for sale. I really would like one but I don't have the heart to have something that is in so desperate need of help.

:screwy: They don't take them from the wild for home aquaria. They've been capitvely bred for years. They're going extinct in the wild because the natives are idiots, not becuase hobbyists are stealing them. Calm down, read the whole article, and have a drink

The pet trade has nothing to do with them going extinct. They've been lab bred for decades. I HIGHLY doubt you could find wild caught specimens if you tried

I have read two articles now that say contributions from home aquarists have also helped in them becoming threatened.

This is true, but you are confused. It is home aquarists releasing non-native species into the axolotl environment that are causing them harm, not home aquarists that keep axolotls as pets. Almost all pet axolotl are bred in captivity. If keeping them as pets was truly a threat to their existence then there would already be restrictions put in place.

Ok thank you for helping me understand the poorly written article. I really think they are adorable little guys and have read on them. Look like a nice lil pet to have. I just hope they don't dissapear.

Really? They are so easily bred... most over here will be captive or farm bred. Hence all the different colour mutations.

One of the only things that I was disappointed with, with the Blue Planet/ Planet Earth series is that they were very general with names of species. I was waiting for Attenbourgh to pronounce axolotl but alas he never did. The brits have crazy accents anyway you have to ask a mexican :D

I used to pronouce chiclids as CHEECH lids.
