hey i was wonderinf how to teach the rays im getting to hand feed...then i saw an article about how there can be some venomous rays...so im not sure if motoros are venomous or not any help would be great thanks and merry christmas

i have a 125 they are going in they in march im builing a 1500 gallon pond:).......but the stinger is there poison...and what are the chances the will hit me?

they can be very dangerous if startled or suddenly scared..i use plastic tongs to make sure the smaller ones get their share..i wouldnt suggest hand feeding..

it's safe to say that many people safely feed their stingrays. some people don't. there's a risk that you know is there. people do not get stung often, but if you're going to do it, be careful and be aware of the danger.

and the poison from their barb isn't usually what is lethal. if you're stung in your chest, face or abdomen, it can be fatal... but not usually anywhere else. the puncture wound does more severe damage than the actual poison, but in extremities, tissue necrosis can lead to serious infections.

here's a link to the stingray safety thread, too.

all rays have a poisonous stinger. Its dangerous to hand feed and i dont recommend it, but i do it anyways. It adds to the fun of keeping fish. Whats life without risks? As for teaching it, you dont really need to teach it, best way is, everytime you feed, hold each peice of food between your fingers and skim your fingers on teh surface, then just drop the food. After a while, it'll get used to your hand and just swim to it weather theres food there or not. Not really that safe though, as they sometimes thrash around when they're too hungry and they sense food. just dont stick your on on top of em, put it in front of them where they can see it.

Ashley and I do it as well, but everyone has to choose their own risks :headbang2:screwy:.

I have heard of a couple of people getting stung, and it is something you don't want to try without accepting the fact that there is a chance that it will happen. It is the same thing with owning scissors- don't carry them around without being aware that, if you trip, you might stab yourself in the throat.

Whats so bad about getting stung? Ive gotten it twice already, i mean it hurts, but its not as bad as getting stitches. Anyways, i didnt say you HAVE to do it, neither did i say you CANT do it. All i said was life just isnt life without some risks.

best to let the ray come to the top of the tank and take the food from you first....

I will probabley hear this is wrong but... When i first had my ray in a tank i want to hand feed him. I would cut up worms stick them between my index and middle finger and put it on the sand bed. After about a week of this he began to eat it out of my hand. Just dont move fast or they will turn away and the stinger can be pretty close.
