They're tough as nails. I had one for 10 years before I stupidly got rid of him because I rarely ever saw him out. Big mistake, I miss the little fellow.

ive had one for around 4-5 years now, and he's been with alot of different fish, some extremely aggressive, and he's still going strong, as fat as can be, looking like he just ate a ping pong ball.
however, i NEVER see him unless i move his cave to clean the tank. he never, EVER comes out at feeding time, yet somehow manages to scavenge more than enough food to be as fat and healthy as can be.
for some reason however, im not sure if i could part with him for some reason. ive had the chance to sell him, and could never do it.
