And I am dosing liquid carbon, api I believe because excel was out of stock. Only other plant in there is java fern so is the consensus that the plants are slow growing and not enough to use all the nutrients in the water? Im really focused on the health of the plants above all else at this stage and want to get them perfect before I add discus because I dont want to be having a chemistry experiment with expensive and sensitive fish in there
What I'd say then is definitely add more plants. You can do java fern and anubias in medium-high lighting, but you are going to want to have a good deal of both to suck up nutrients and such.
That can get expensive fast though, since both are not exactly the cheapest of plants. I'd recommend for the time being that you try to get your hands on some cheap, fast growing stem plants that will work with your lighting. Because those grow faster they will remove more nutrients than an equal mass of anubias or java fern.
