If you're dead set on not seeing a doctor, at least set it yourself after a hot/cold dip session and some further exploration. Is the finger crooked or just stiff-straight?

But you should see a doctor if you like being able to use that finger.

After injury you use ice packs for 20 minutes at a time then 40 minutes off for the first 48 hours. If you use ice constantaly you shrink all the capilaries then once the body warms up there will be more swelling. A hot and cold dip will lead to to more problems down the road if its prolonged used.
If you switch from ice to heat during the first 48 hours you will cause more damage. Ice constricts vessels so it minizes swelling, heat dialtes vessels so its more for relaxing muscles and to promote blood flow. Combine this together it stretches everything out and leads to vericose veins or bruses.
But like everyone reccomends i would go to the doc's just to be on the safe side

actually i did go to an a & e, but all it was, was a really badly bruised finger. i think someone may have stepped on it or something last night when i was out cold haha. its still very sore but i've just kept a ice pack on it and the swelling's gone down.

Glad the digit is ok. You sound like a great date!

BTW- I've broken everything more than once. Easiest way to tell is that your in so much pain you'll call the ambulance yourself.

This is why you don't get drunk in foreign countries. You'll wake up the next morning with an injured finger wondering WTH happened.

This thread is worthless without pictures.

In the meanwhile pack that finger in a slab of frozen bacon. That should reduce the swelling. Take 600 mg of ibuprofen and report back after 24 hours with the pictures before and after.

If there's no bone breaking the skin, it's probably not broken. At worst you could have a hairline fracture, which could be painful. Nothing to worry about though. Remember you have 9 other fingers than can absorb the load.
