Hows Everyones Army's Doin?

Mine are doing ok on hikari sticks. I'm noticing that Armies don't grow as fast on pellets as fish filets. My previous Armies were training on tilapia chunks and they only ate one chunk per day but it was like 1/4 of the size of their body. The Armies I have now eat sticks but don't eat as many as the equivalent of one big chunk of filet. So they don't eat as much. I'm sure nutritionally the pellets are better but they grew faster on fish chunks. IME. I'd like to get them to try and take some filets soon just so they get more of a variety.

I notice the same thing with my bass. When I feed hikari sticks their stomachs are empty the next day, but with tilapia they're stomachs are still full the next day. It beefs them up and they seem to grow faster on it.

Interesting how almost all of the armatus that were picked up over the last several months seem to be doing well. I've yet to hear any stories of mystery deaths that seemed common in the past. Are the current armatus still too small or has something changed?

It's still too early to tell.

I think that the water needs to be compared too, but not many monitor it. Which I can understand, monitoring it is NOT cheap, but I think it's something that needs to be done. I only have 1 more meter left before I feel like we could get a good idea of the water parameters.

I don't think people realize how different some of our tap water is from the river.

Mine still have about 4-5 inches before they're to the point of where I started loosing them in the past, but I'm in no rush to get them off feeders this time.... I had the best luck with my very first one which was still on feeders at close to a foot.

Mine are doing well. Still on feeders and will be long term. Feed every other day and they come to the front of the tank when they see me. So they now recognize that I am the food bearer.:)

Looking good trev ... it is interesting the pellet vs nonpellet Army growth ... the 2 I had that died grew much faster, and were eating silversides and smelt, but died at about 11 inches but went from 5-11 inches in like 3-4 months ... the one I have now is about 16 inches and eating only pellets, but is a year and a half old, and took almost a year to get to the size the other guys reached in only a few months, but he's also alive and thriving ... my biggest reasoning is the first 2 stuffed themselves, I mean gorged everyday, while my current pellet eating Army only eats a few pellets everyday and is content .... I think its a matter of pure calorie intake allowing for more growth ... I have to say, however, in the last 2 weeks my guy has gotten very aggressive during feeding time and has probably doubled his pellet intake going from 10 massivores, to about 20 a day so I expect some good growth ... he was always a tentative eater, but now is more aggressive, and thus scary since if he and another fish go for the same pellet his weapons can cause crazy damage ... the bambusa found this out first hand last night, getting his head literally stuck in the Armies mouth for a second or 2, but no injuries thank goodness

On another note, I've noticed every datnoid I get eating pellets grows rediculously fast and is very healthy, while the ones I've only been able to get onto krill and shrimp are less healthy, slowly waste away, and grow painstakingly slow ... thinking maybe they eat the same mass of pellets that they would krill/shrimp therefor taking in more calories since pellets have more whereas the Armies seem content eating just a few pellets, thus making their calorie intake less than if they ate large tilapia/silverside chunks .... sorry I talk a lot!

There's an old thread on here and they came to a theory in it that smelt and silversides had something to do with the random deaths....I think that was one of the things everyone in the thread who's army died had in common. I'll try to dig it up and post it there might be some helpful info in it.
