I'm more nervous about the amount of flow/current (turnover rate) for a rift lake tank. Will the water be too turbulent for Mbuna? I was planning on using a Mag 9 for my sump return.

Just split your returns off, don't use a "compression end" (not sure of the correct term here, just use straight 1/2" or 3/4") on the returns.

What should I run in the XP3? Ceramic Rings? Bio-Chem Zorb? Carbon? Bio-Chem Stars? etc...

If you don't mind throwing money away you can't have too much filtration.

With that said, I'd go ahead and get the XP3. It's always better to have complete redundancy when it comes to the life support of the tank.
