Decided to test nitrates on my 190g discus tank for the heck of it. Check these results out, 0ppm!!! That's what a light stock, RO/DI water, and daily 40g water changes gets you :) Here's proof you can get zero nitrates without denitrators, algae scrubbers, or a ton of plants!

And for comparison, the water out of my tap:

Well, yeah...
You could do that with most all tanks and get those results.
Makes me tired just thinking about all that work.
Heck of a RO unit to get 40g a day..
Just say`in...

It is pretty much automated though--a lot of work to setup, not a lot once it is. I'd probably still throw some sort of fast growing plant or something in the sump just for fun--might as well.

Before I knew that having 0ppm Nitrates was a huge accomplishment... I would test the water in my 55g and always get that reading.. and that's also when I didn't do frequent WC and I didn't clean the gravel but like every 2 months.. not sure what was going on .. but it was the norm with that tank.. the tanks I have now.. always get a reading.. :(

I`ll bet it was.

Good luck to ya.
Plants wilt when they see me getting near them.

Nice. I'm sure the discus are stoked.

Those bastards better be! Soft water, zero nitrates, live foods, not sure what else I could do :nilly:

Thx, I did almost knock it in there while taking the pic ha!

Not if you have nitrates coming out of the tap, which a lot of us do. Even with constant water changes you're still not going to get it lower than what your tap is, unless you use one of the methods I mentioned. Nitrates from my tap vary from 10-20ppm.

And it's no work at all. Check out my build thread in my sig. Just hit two buttons on a remote control; one to drain, one to refill. The RO/DI water goes to an aging barrel that's controlled with a float valve. This setup makes it almost too easy to perform daily water changes. :)

Yeah it sure was a pain! But now that I look back, I'm glad I took the extra effort. I have thought about adding some plants to the sump, but I'd need to figure out how to cover the back of the stand, since I don't want all that light pouring out. Maybe a thick sheet of black cloth...

Yeah it is a big accomplishment IMO! Especially when you have nitrates out of the tap, since you're adding nitrates back in when you do a water change. Sort of defeats the purpose! My old 400g tank when stocked with a bunch of pbass would stay at 80ppm+ even with weekly 75% water changes. Once I set up a 24/7 drip, I was able to get them down to 15-20ppm.

Can't be that bad! I'm sure some water hyacinths in a sump would do great, and they grow like a weed with really long roots. They only need a decent light above them.
