Sand and rock like the OP has is the way to go. Rift lake African setups should have sandy substrates with crushed coral (or a rock that will buffer the water) and no driftwood. Driftwood makes your water too soft and acidic.... the opposite of what these fish need.

Plants are nice but do not dominate the scape in the lakes, except for a few specialized areas at river outflows, where grass beds exist.
 
looks like a saltwater setup minus anything really colorfull. you need something with some contrast in there either dark sane, or plants or whatever but i like the rock layout
 
Looks great but I would add some plants. I use live plants, like java fern and anubias. Just use some AC glue and stick them on some smaller rocks and place the on the big ones.
