huge driftwood stump, but the insides rotten..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
now that the insides rotted and chipped away there is an awesome little tunnel/hiding spot.

Was thinking the same thing regarding the hiding spots. It should look awesome in you tank.
I think its gonne leach tannins for the first while at least but it will be well worth it afterwards.
I leave all my driftwood in the bath for a couple weeks replacing the water with hot tap water every 12 hours or so and i still get a bit of tannins in the tank afterwards.

If you really want to clean up the tannins in your tank you could always use some purigen from Seachem

yea its not so much the natural tannis i'm worried about, its to be expected. that it is a good point though, that its been soaking for so long its a pretty light color when dry so on the outside i'm not sure whats left to leech, but the darker brownish redish wood i scooped from the inside was leaching enough to almost make the runoff muddy it was so dense with dead fibers which is what i think will really foul up the water.

bath tubs a great idea but my sons in there every night at 8 so it may get to be not worth it moving it so much as its such a heavy piece

and thanks for the links, ill check those out now

also, i was planning on adding some dithers, as i only have 1 male guppy left and hes resorted to doing nothing but skating around the very top of the tank, probably a small shoal of tetras or something, so i can definitely try them out in the water and see how they take it before i throw it in, good idea

I've salvaged a few pieces of drift wood. The best is to put it in your bath( once the main dirt is washed off obviously) and rince it off a couple hundred times, use a nail brush( new one ofcourse, don't wanna poison your fish here) and scrub every inch of the wood. Once that's done pour in boiling water and soak the wood for a couple hours in that boiling water.

My main worry would be that it will continue to rot once in the tank (rather than the tannins) which may lead to water quality problems. If you could put it in a tank with wood-eating plecs like Panaque Sp. they would do a great job of cleaning the soft wood out for you, then you could put it in the piranha tank.
