State police were posted to keep people from climbing on the dock, said Mitch Vance, shellfish program manager for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Thanks for posting that - I would have been pretty ticked-off if I got there (over 2 hours drive) and they wouldn't let me climb up on it. Oh, well, like Eddie said, I'm sure the weather will probably be nasty this weekend.
I have a feeling it might not be. It probably won't be too hard to pull that thing off the beach, and I read that it is causing parking/traffic issues with all the gawkers.
They scraped off everything and buried it, then went over it with blowtorches. Probably a little excessive, considering the hundreds of Japanese freighters that come to Portland every year.
It was not that long ago, I'm pretty sure it is still there. They aren't stopping people from climbing on it anymore either, since they cleaned off all the seaweed.
