So, we checked on one of the grow out tanks this morning, fed everyone breakfast, and everything was fine. My husband went in at 6 p.m. and everything in the tank was dead. The heater had malfunctioned so badly that the plastic blistered all over the place. The thermometer in there only registers to a little above 100, and the temp was higher than that. It was so hot in there that it was uncomfortable to put our hands in. Everything was so hot it was exploding.
We learned that this particular heater had been recalled when we took it in to the store where we bought it. They were awesome about replacing all the fish they could at no charge to us. We basically sign our paycheck over to them anyway, so they're good to us. We couldn't replace everything, though, because not everything we lost was purchased locally.
I am emailing the heater company tonight to see what, if anything, can be done.
We lost:
1 bgk
2 clown loaches
2 senegals
1 endli
1 leaf fish my daughter got my husband for his bday. It turned out to be really cool!
6 buenos aires tetras that we kept in there to keep bacteria in the tank we weren't growing anything
a handful of cory cats
2 ottos
pond snails
mystery snails
We are so bummed. It was awful.
