So we have brand new baby retic pups born 2 days ago. We were just looking at the babies and one of them has completely broken off his tail its a clean break but broken way up by his body. He has maybe .34 to 1" of tail left and no barb. Whats the chance of survival for the little guy? He seems to be doing ok it's a tiny bit red. I feel so bad for the little guy......on a good side though he can never sting anybody LOL

Should be ok with clean water and some time, I had a Florida gar bite the tail ofF my Retic and it grew It back in About7 Months

Yea... That is a potential problem lol. Hopefully he continues to eat. Def clean water, salt, & I would personally put Mela fix in.
What else is in the tank with him?

He is only 3 days old now so hasn't even started eating yet (not surprising usually they start eating around day 4 or so) I salted the tank (not fun on 750 gallons) he is in a small pup tank of 30 gallons with his 2 brothers both litter mates, plumbed inline with the parents tank. I may do melafix if he seems to have a problem with the tail later in time. Right now he seems to be doing fine and is still swimming and active. Hoping he starts eating tomorrow or Monday. I wasn't aware that the tails could grow back?? He broke it off above the stinger so could that grow back as well? We were kind of hoping not LOL

There was a similar thread a while back with a partially broken tail. Should be fine if you can get it eating, but prob wont grow back. If the vertebrae are gone then they are gone and there is nothing that can bring them back. Fins heal but past that point no. Looks like stumpy will be without a tail and a barb for that matter. If so makes it much safer for tankmates.
