Huge problem!!!!

Clean water.. melafix and high temps = bad juju.. i wouldn't use it unless you started seeing infection and i'm sure there are actual meds that would be more ray appropriate if need be. But i'm sure you've seen as many of the pics as I have around here of pretty bad ray wounds that heal up given time and clean water. One of my gar tried retic tail once.. retics now fine and her tail was mangled pretty good.. gar shredded most of it down to bone. MIght wanna remove his buddies if you notice them nipping otherwise if it ain't broke don't fix it ( my big female did nip abit at my lil' ones raw tail as it was healing a time or two when she'd get hungry)

The 3 are in a tank by themselves and being so tiny they should be ok with each other but I will keep a close eye on them. Salted the tank and did a big water change and system is on an auto water change once a day. He seems to be doing really well just waiting for him to start eating now.....

Well I think he will be just fine. And do u
You mean tank mates as in safer for me around him???? So dose that mean non of you play with the rays ??? Are rays like to play and they love eating right out of my hands. And I think out of all of then are hystrix the most laid. He love to get in my way when I'm cleaning the inside if the tanks but I just slide him around the tank.

the tail wont grow back and being so young i would be very careful about adding chemicals even if you are trying to help.

you said you added salt but the tank is plumbed into the main tank so did you add enough salt for the total water volume of both tanks or just enough for the small tank ( in which case it will disperse in the main tank and be useless ) are you topping up the salt after water change? it might be a consideration.

this happend to me on my last litter and if you search for "how to help stumpy the stingray" you will see what happened but stumpy is doing fine and is now eating pellets along with her brethren

i actually think there could be a marked for "stingless stingrays" if they could be bred without amputations as they would be safe and pose no risk but i would agree that purposful amputation would cause a whole new set of problems.

good luck :)

Yes I added enough salt for the whole system didn't figure it would hurt. I haven't added any more as its on an auto water change of 50 gallons per day but I figure he should have gotten enough benefit of the salt by the time all the salt is out of the system. I will look up your stumpy thread. I have added nothing but salt and he seems to be doing great.

if it helps at all i had stumpy in salt for the duration of the problem. its the concentration of the salt that matters, not just having some in the system, so once the salt concentration drops below xxx ( i cant remember what i used per liter but i posted it on the stumpy thread ) you arnt really doing anything.
if you put the salt in and keep the drip on without topping up the salt then the concentration that is requred will be diluted quite fast and stop working because its below the required concentration.

with that in mind i would say you have done more of a salt dip than a full treatment. that said, i think your ray will probably be just as well without the salt as long as the water is good. ( adding salt make you feel better though, i know it did me ;) ) .

its also worth noting that i increased the salt dosage in incriminents and did not get upto the full dosage all at once ( which seems like quite alot at first ).

good luck but im sure he will be fine on the drip system even without the salt. its probably better to keep things the same for the ray rather than change the water chemistry (not that i think adding salt affects even poorly rays if its done slowly) . stumpys tail fell off much quicker than i expected and there are lots of joints in the tail as its so flexible so that will hopefully help it drop off and heal rather than be a dead appendage :) ( i wish id realised it would drop off so quick when i had this problem with stumpy but we learn all the time ) .

good luck :)

Luckily for stubs our ray his was a total absolute clean break at the time of injury and the remaining tail was sitting in the tank when we noticed the problem. He seems to be absolutely fine haven't added any more salt. He started eating yesterday and is just as active as his brothers. None the less I think we will be keeping stubs :)
