Hello,

my tank is a 55long and consists of a payara scomb (5in) and a hujeta gar (3.5in). i dont think there is any agression, they actually dont seem to mind eachother. the scomb swims up where the hujeta is and just looks at it and goes back to the bottom.

Ive had the scomb for a month or so, and i barely got the hujeta a couple days ago.

the issue is, when im feeding minnows to the two, the payara gets it all because the minnows seek refuge behind the driftwood located at the bottom and the pyara just hangs out nearby until they swim out.

how long can the hujeta go without eating? every weekend when i have time i try the fishing line trick with silversides, smelt, and shrimp to atleast get the hujeta to eat it. my plan was to get the hujeta to eat non-live and eventually the scomb will catch on.

anyone have any pointers? ive read that people put in frozen bloodworms but my tank has alot of current and no bottom feeders to clean the bottom since the worms end up getting blown everywhere.

I had an idea of buying petsmart silverdollars to use as "teacher fish" since they have a sale going on right now, but they sell them at extremely small sizes. Im sure my scomb would eat them immediately

What I've always done for my hujetas is give them live crickets of appropriate size. They would take to them voraciously. Once it is eating them, it'll transfer to carnisticks quite easily.

The scomb at some point will take out the hujeta gar once it gets to a good size. Let me just say. They play nice but go away for a weekend and there goes the rocket gar.

I had a similar combo and that happened. Cause the hujeta won't get much girth and the scomb will get bigger and bolder.

Anyway....hujetas like being in schools. 3-4 will put it at ease. They will take flakes and floating foods if prepared right.

I used carnisticks and soaked hem till soft and cut them into strips and that helped. Also used krill that float, also into strips.

Teacher fish are always a plus but the rocket gars are not as difficult as others. I would stay away from silver $'s cause of them being a bit bold. It will scare ur one gar. Also they will fill up a 55g easily and ur waste will go up quick.

Try getting more gars with floating plants and the floting foods.

Mmm yea i bought the last one at my local LFS, im definately going to get more. Thanks!

Btw it just ate a minnow a couple minutes ago, i guess it was probably getting used to the tank still

Yea i was going to try crickets but my boy is bringing a couple mealworms he feeds to his arowana to try later tonight. He insists that the mealworms would work but it just took down a big minnow. Hopefully the scomb would grab the mealworm..
