Hello everyone, this is my first post here yet.

I have been looking here and on some eu forums, i have a 100g (160x50x50cm) in which i want to have a gymnotus anguillaris or possibly gymnotus pedanopterus, i want it to co exist with a few (3-5) hujeta gars and my 2 bulldog pleco's L187A / L187B.

I have read about the gymnotus pedanopterus being quite aggressive and was wondering if anybody here has some experience with keeping one with other types of fish?

My preference would be for the gymnotus anguillaris since that should be less aggressive but its hard to find here in the Netherlands.

i do like the colors more on the gymnotus pedanopterus, so thats why im asking if it would be ok to house with hujeta gars.

The pedanopterus im looking at should be around 12cm right now and grow up to 25/30cm, the hujeta gars would probably be around the same size and should grow till 18/25cm but i could wait with those till the knifefish is a decent size. So they dont eat each other.

i got 2 big rocks, some large driftwood and a couple plants right now (which i want to grow out more before i buy the hujeta's, got a cover on the tank which i will be raising and adding screen side walls to so the fish could jump a bit without hitting anything, middle glass stabillisation strip will be covered in wood and sides i might do the same or let plants grow on the side.

On one hand i could get another tank for just the knife if its too aggressive but i kinda really want them in the big tank together, so if anybody has some tips, tricks, info or any other comments thats very welcome.

Ps will take some better pics at night time soon

hello. no, it's not a good combination. Gymotus - typical is tightness and shyness. I think your gymnotus would end up killed or bitten by ctenolucius hujeta.I would rather keep Gymnotus fish with peaceful larger species. I certainly wouldn't underestimate Ctenolucius Hujeta.

Hi, is that even if the knifefish is about 10cm bigger than the hujeta?

Got any other cool fish to recommend with the gymnotus?

I would like something that would eat live guppy's since i got those in my other tank. And that has some teeth in their mouth or looks like a Pike or gar.

I spoke to someone on a Dutch forum that has had a gymnotus knifefish with some hujeta beani's and reported no issues since the knife sticks to the bottom of the tank while the hujeta's are chilling in the plants at the top or middle. Its just one person though.

therefore i wanted a lot of plants so they both can hide plus some sort of cave at the end of the tank, had the thought of glueing in a glass plate with some rocks under and ontop of it then dump some more substrate on the glass itself with possibly some plants.

Any suggestions are welcome

That tank is way too small for C. hujeta. They get easily spooked and will bash their heads in on the glas. An having the tank in the middle of the room with all sides open will just make it worse.

The tank is close to the wall, only time ill be behind it is when i wake up/go to sleep (bedroom door is behind it) or when doing maintenance on the tank / pumps, ive been told 160cm wide should be plenty for the hujeta's but like i said im open for other species suggestions, i appreciate you guys's input a lot though
