hujeta (silver/rocket) gar feeding problem

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
For my Stripped Pike Characin I used to have to knock out the feeders so they didn't get away from him. Just slammed on the counter. When I first brought home my SA Arrowana I put sliverslides on the tip of a scewer to get him eatin' none live, pinched it in place with the lid just beneath the surface of the water - worked really well.

so more success came with rosy reds. I threw in one rosy red and a guppy, both approx same size, the cichlids came after the guppy which was then hidden between rocks, and the gar charged for the rosy red. the stomach looks happy now. I think I will buy these from now on. are there any concerns with rosy reds?

You should quarintine and treat any live food you get. Because they commonly have parasites and fungus.

But as long as they are healthy there is no problem with rosey's or guppies.

So I have a small fish bowl where I keep the rosy reds and the guppies, I just do frequent water changes and an air bubbler for it and thats it.

I am having much success with the rosy reds for the gar. I hold the minnow by the tail and dip the head into the water so that it struggles. the gar notices it that way and swims close to my hand, I release the minnow and the gar pounces on it instantly! so far I have been doing this every day, and he looks like he can eat more than one. not sure if i want to feed him more.

i usually get about 20 of them, quarantine them and drop them in all at once so that they can eat whenever they want.
