Human Indiference and Fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Depends on the fish.

If we are talking about L46 yes. IBAMA has put a ban on that fish until it restores it's population. I support that decision. There are debates from everyone but the people living their about what is another reason for the reduction of population is. The dam, mining, logging... not enough logging have all been excepted as possible reasons for the decline in numbers. However it seems that people buying zebra pleco's now listed as wild even thouhg they are illegal is pretty popular. :screwy:

I would not go to the extent of saying every living fish we keep in our tanks should be captive bred. Thanks to asian breeding we see more genetic disorders in the hobby today then we would have everseen elsewise. Neon Tetra Disease, The angel and discus plague, Tattoo'ing dyeing and bleaching. I don't think we can even call oscars Astronotus any more! Goldfish are man made. Those fish creat alternate solutions but are they doing good for the sp?

As an exporter I can tell you that we do not see fluctuations in the quantities of fish we sell. Silver arowanna are sold in the 100,000's to asia during breeding season and have been over decades without lowering the population. It's just a matter of what fish and how it is collected. Exporters are never in the same region very long. They rotate to find different stock. This gives the sp time to reguvinate it's population.

While some fish are bred in tank. MANY are bred in ponds. Fish are interbred repeatedly and in unfavorable invironments. Similar to placing a few dogs in a kennal and letting them breed without doing any cleaning. It gets pretty messy.

I agee with Waldo with reference to breeding dogs ! I work in child care and any issues which are new to me I think of dog behaviour as a similie. Breeding to new blood is a must though the kennel club is distroying blood lines in favour of their standards. Look at any working dog and their show brothers, there's no comparison. Give me the working dog any day. I'd like to see all fish keepers breeding and putting something back to nature or to the trade, but learnt behaviour and poor breeding would in my opinion destroy wild populations.
My fish are wild caught (I would love to breed them though) and my dogs are bred for work. This has been outlawed in England (hunting with hounds) as I can foresee importing fish will be. Captive breeding must be promoted as should importing to recognised breeders. The film 'Nemo' must have caused destruction to wild populations and habitat as will internet sights .The gold fish given a few years could be bred to represent any fish. WATCH OUT I will predict the 'politically correct' nations will have a try at this !

Actually, there are a few dwarf angels being bred in captivity in Hawaii, including the $250-$800 Japanese Angel. Price depends on where you buy it from. I saw there web site a few months ago, but can't remember for the life of me
