Hi,
I remembered how At zoos and aquariums they some times have stingray touch tanks. I know they de barb the rays, but they never get scared and get you.

Is this because you aren't a threat or because they know they are de barbed?
Would fresh water rays behave that way too even if they still have barbs?

I'm not going to go de barb any rays or stick my hand in the tank to try and grab one, but is there a semi-safe way of touching or hand feeding freshwater rays?

Thanks!

if you do it right yes you can hand feed your rays..

let them come up the glass for the food, and you wont have a problem, but let the ray do the work

if you want to pet your ray, you should have gotten a dog or cat instead. I hand feed my rays every once in a while, but I like to let them hunt for there food. keeps them insterested in food.

I don't really want to, I was just curious.

Thanks for the help!

many of the touch tanks remove the barbs, or at least thats what seaworld says. they have a large ray feeding pool that you can pet and feed the rays at. they have one that is no lie about 5 feet in diameter.

I used to be able to hand feed my old Humerosa (RIP) w/o worrying about the barb. Just let the ray come to you, eventually they get it.

its all in how comfortable you are with your rays... my rays see my hand alot and even when im not trying to touch them they are so curios they will come over just to see what all the fuss is about...but i touch mine...

my bff and i went swimming with wild stingrays in the caymans they let you pick them up some easily 5' across and they just come for the food...i have pics in my albums of us holding them if u wanna see,, it was very awesome.

Thats cool.

After hearing this, its almost hard to see how people end up getting stung! (JK)

Who has gotten stung by the way?
I'm not worried about it, but I'd like to hear what it was like.
