humane ways to kill a fish (to be blunt)

Here is an excerpt from an article I've read. Pick your poison.

Only a year or so ago putting them in boiling water or leaving them in the refrigerator would be considered ok. Both of the above can be painful, although the boiling is very quick.

I have favored a super cold ice solution as quicker and less stressful than the slow freezing of a fish put in the refrigerator. Now I have to reconsider this too.

Some people are repulsed by the violence of pulling the fish on a hard surface and making a quick knife cut to the brain. Likewise hurling the fish at a cement wall is quick, but unpopular.

Decapitation can also be quick and effective. But sometimes the disconnected body doesn't know that it is dead and this can be very disturbing to the aquarist.

Suffocation in soda water has been used too.

Clove oil is gaining acceptance with some aquarists as an accessible and relatively inexpensive anesthetic. Use a drop at a time until the fish is asleep.
One source suggested "Start with 5 drops per gallon and wait about 10 minutes if (the) fish has't gone over on it's side or is deep enough to be worked on add 2-3 more drops per gallon and wait tem more minutes." Clove oil sometimes is labeled "Eugenol" It can usually be found in most large pharmacies and health food stores in liquid form in small bottles. In one case a guy found it in a drug store as "Red Cross Toothache Medication."

boiled? poisoned?...are yall retarded, take the slimy lil buger and spike him like you just caught the winning touchdown in the super bowl. Its fun and its instant, i have yet to have a fish survive to complain about it. just kiddin bout the retarded thing, each to his own way i guess

i just put alkaseltzer plus in a bowl and put him in there, he went out in like 30 seconds. but my mom is furious and yelling at me and wont talk and blah blah blah. can someone explain how what i did was not so wrong.

Are you for real?
I will definitely take your Jack Dempsey. Maybe you should consider a new hobby, one that will not encompass the taking care of any live animals. But if you're really interested in getting rid of this fish, I will definitely take it.

only prob i have with throwing a fish on the floor is if it doesnt die right away and you have to pick him up and throw it again... or f it slipps out ur hand when ur throwin it

Clove oil till he sleeps, then into the 32 degree pond.. fishie sickle.

Or ice in a bucket of salt (a bunch of rock salt) water. Salt will lower the freezing temp to below 32.. stir it up good & then add jack. I know it spunds "cold" but you are talking friggin freezing

Below is a prior post on the issue . . . .

Here is my opinion.
To clear confusion about baking soda, it is fine as an anesthetic, much like clove oil. it will nit suffocate a fish.
Clove oil is fine.

Ice water is 32 degrees. if you want to freeze a fish do it in ice water... add some salt & the temp goes even lower. A 10% salt solution should lower the freezing point to 20°F and a 20% salt solution should be about 2°F. a rather quick shutdown of metobolic functions, when put directly in the solution.

I just love to quote myself

it was tearing up all the fish and she is like "you had no place to kill it aaron, it is something living" she told me to go throw him out in the 20 degree pond

i put up a thread about it and no one said anything till i said something about puttin him to sleep. like 5 people suggested it

im really not that cold, i dont have another tank for him, he is ripping all the other fish apart, and no one wanted him, and the lfs wouldnt take him either. I had no choice. but my mom seems to think that it is just fine to put him into a jar till he is dead. she is mad that I killed it. she is so retarded and knows nothing about fish
