How big is your tank? I find GT's tend to get nasty in smaller tanks, so a 55 shared with Severums or anything else is a no-no.

I have a 125, current stock : ebjd, nic, sev, 4 sd, 2 common pleco

some species of fish are more aggro towards conspecifcs ... fish that look like them ...

so while a GT might not be bothered by a severum, which looks nothing like a GT, it might be aggro towards a JD, which shares similar body type, size and coloring

example, my JD never bothered a convict or salvini in his tank, but took exception to the GT ... my Port Acara never bothered a Texas cichlid, but was very aggro towards a Blue Acara ...

a similar-looking fish is seen as potential competition, so there is more potential for aggression ...

I never realized how closely gt and jd resemble one another once you look past the hump on a gt and the coloration.

Who do you see keeping adult severums and GT's together? You might see a lot of juvies together, but you don't see adults because it generally doesn't work out.

i had 2 sevs a gt and a jd together for years no problems and the fish were not juvies either!

If its fairly common to keep sev & gt together, and sev & egjd together then why is it so frowned upon to keep ebjd & gt together? Have many tried and failed or is it that since ebjd aren't as aggressive/tough as jd so people tend to over react and coddle them?

as above my friend - just make sure to have plenty of hiding spots or ornaments to block the fishes line of sight - also if aggression is shown you could always remove all fish, rearange decor and add least aggressive first and most aggro last.....

Sounds like pretty sound advice ^ to me.
